Deb Belyea: The Artist Behind Urapun Muy (One Fire)

Deb Belyea, a proud member of the Samuawgadhalgal Cassowary Clan, created the artwork that won the 2024 NAIDOC poster competition. Her piece, "Urapun Muy" (One Fire), was selected by the NAIDOC committee for its powerful depiction of cultural knowledge sharing. Belyea's artwork reflects the 2024 NAIDOC theme, "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud," celebrating the resilience and vibrancy of Torres Strait Islander art and Aboriginal art.

The Story Behind "Urapun Muy" (One Fire) "Urapun Muy" means "One Fire" in the Kalaw Kawaw Ya dialect, symbolising the unifying spirit of Indigenous culture. The artwork depicts ancestral hands placing an ember into a fire, representing the transfer of cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. This powerful imagery resonates with the NAIDOC theme, emphasising the importance of maintaining and sharing our cultural heritage.
