Electric Fields Represent Australia at Eurovision 2024: A Milestone for Indigenous Representation

The electronic music duo Electric Fields will represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. Composed of Zaachariaha Fielding and Michael Ross, Electric Fields will perform their new track, "One Milkali (One Blood)," which incorporates the Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal language.

Electric Fields is known for their unique blend of contemporary electronic soul and ancient Indigenous culture. The duo sings in  Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara, and English, reflecting their commitment to showcasing their roots through modern expressions.

Fielding, from the remote community of Mimili in South Australia, brings his powerful voice and experiences as a queer Indigenous person to the duo. Ross, from Adelaide, contributes his extensive musical talent and production skills.

Their entry, "One Milkali (One Blood)," carries a message of unity and shared humanity, which resonates deeply in today's world. For Fielding, singing in an Indigenous language at Eurovision is an opportunity to honour his heritage and challenge historical narratives surrounding Indigenous peoples in Australia. This act of representation and visibility is a significant step towards acknowledging and celebrating the cultural diversity of Australia and the strength of its Indigenous communities.

Electric Fields' path to Eurovision has been marked by earlier successes and challenges, including a near miss for Eurovision representation in 2019, where they were beaten by Kate Miller-Heidke for the top spot in 'Eurovision - Australia Decides'. Their selection in 2024 highlights their persistence and evolving artistry. As they prepare for their performance in Sweden, the duo aims to use their art as a bridge between cultures and peoples, mindful of the current global and political climates.

Beyond the competition, Electric Fields seeks to make a lasting impact with their message of unity, acceptance, and cultural pride. As Australia watches and supports, the duo is set to inspire and provoke thought, continuing their journey of breaking barriers and embracing the full spectrum of human experience.

Electric Fields' participation in Eurovision 2024 is a moment of pride and progress for Australia, celebrating cultural diversity and the transformative power of music. Their performance will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the global stage, showcasing the talent and rich heritage of Indigenous Australia.
