CONTINUING OUR LEGACY - PICNIC MAT

Continuing Our Legacy

"Inspired by the 2025 NAIDOC theme.

A piece that brings powerful connection to the next generation. Throughout the artwork are multiple storylines representing the journey we are all on – to connect, learn, teach & love, and passing this knowledge down to the generation after us. The sun and moon symbolise our ancestors guiding us and protecting us along our paths – while the hands represent connection and belonging. The Emu tracks to symbolise our generation and the generations after us moving forward in a strong and determined light. A piece that was created to represent a brighter future for all."

Tayla Donaczy

Mutthi Mutthi artist, Tayla-Dehne Donaczy, is on a powerful journey of self-discovery, cultural connection, and healing. With family members affected by the Stolen Generation, she's faced the challenge of reconnecting with lost stories and knowledge. About three years ago, painting became her bridge to the past, a way to connect with ancestors and express stories visually. What started as therapy has evolved into a deep exploration of identity and culture.

Family, the land, sky, water, community, and especially her Nan, inspire Tayla-Dehne's artwork. Through acrylics and POSCA pens, she explores themes of healing, learning, genuine appreciation, and connection. Her mission is to ensure that cultural knowledge and stories are passed down to future generations, keeping traditions alive within her family. Through each brushstroke, Tayla-Dehne reclaims lost narratives and creates new ones, ensuring that the voice of her ancestors continues to resonate.
