Lockyer-50 Years Deadly
This piece is about sky and saltwater.
Ancestors and the next generation.
Past and future sitting in the same moment.
When I think about fifty years of NAIDOC, I don’t think about dates or milestones. I think about people. The ones who stood up when it wasn’t safe. The ones who kept culture strong when everything tried to erase it and us. The aunties, uncles, artists, activists, storytellers and everyday mob who carried us forward.
In this artwork the sky becomes our memory. The stars are our old people, watching, guiding, reminding us who we are. Each light is a life, a story, a voice that refused to go quiet.
The ocean below is the next generation. Always moving. Always becoming. Full of colour, full of life, full of dreams and possibility.
The meeting place sits at the centre of the 50, because NAIDOC has always belonged to community. It’s where we gather, yarn stories, grieve loss, laugh together and plan what comes next. It’s where strength lives.
Fifty years of deadly isn’t just looking back.
It’s proof that we’re still here, still creating and still leading.
