Wii wiima-li (Make a Fire)
This year’s NAIDOC theme resonates with the work I am doing in the Education space to keep the fire burning, supporting the community to be loud and proud, and offering a cultural lens for the wider community. The central meeting place in the artwork, and each connector meeting place, are representative of a metaphoric fiery ripple effect in terms of keeping the fire burning through truth telling, standing proud in our identity and using our voices and languages to say, ‘we are here; blak, loud and proud’. In the landscape of the piece are fires ready to be awakened; an invitation for the wider community to yarn proper ways, and to honour and celebrate the oldest continuing cultures on this Earth.
