Ancestral Lines Wins NAIDOC Poster Competition

'Ancestral Lines' by Jeremy Worrall Takes Out NAIDOC 2025 Poster Competition

Big news from the National NAIDOC Committee – they've just announced the winner of the poster competition for 2025! Jeremy Morgan Worrall, a proud Ngarbal/Gomeroi artist from northern New South Wales, has taken home the prestigious honour with his digital masterpiece Ancestral Lines.

The Story Behind the Art

Ancestral Lines is set beneath the swirling clouds and moonlit skies of Tenterfield, the artwork shows the next generation gathering around a fire – listening, learning, and getting ready to lead. It's a scene that feels both ancient and completely relevant to today.

Worrall's brought together traditional Ngarbal linework with techniques inspired by woodhatching and ghost painting. Animal tracks weave through the design, marking out hunting grounds and food sources, whilst paying tribute to the River Severn that flows through Ngarbal Country.

What makes it extra special is its deeply personal connection. The artwork honours Worrall's own family line, from his ancestors Lucy, Enoch and Nonie Wright, right through to his Nanna Audrie and mum Vanessa.

Bridging Past and Future

Worrall deliberately channelled the aesthetic of NAIDOC posters from the 80s and 90s, wanting to acknowledge the talented artists who've come before whilst creating something fresh and contemporary. This approach perfectly embodies this year's NAIDOC theme.

His philosophy speaks volumes – That is, looking back actually helps us move forward. As Worrall explains, reflecting on his mob's journey helps him see what's ahead more clearly.

Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders

The heart of Ancestral Lines beats with an inspiring message for young Indigenous people everywhere. It reminds them they come from incredible strength – from a legacy of survival and brilliance that goes back thousands of years. That foundation provides real empowerment for building an amazing future.

Worrall knows firsthand how important these connections are. His own artistic journey was shaped by family – from his artist mother to uncles who taught him traditional painting techniques. Now he's paying it forward, showing the next generation what's possible when you honour your culture whilst making your mark in contemporary spaces.
