This artwork is named “Ancestors”.
Our Ancestors are still connected as their spirts inhabit the tribal country even after they have passed on. It is within the Aboriginal belief that our ancestors are still connected to the land they once occupied and lived in. This is shown when a new person visit’s tribal country, they must go through a smoking ceremony that cleanses them of bad energies. This ceremony also lets the Ancestors know that they are entering their country. Different tribal groups have certain traditions that they perform which fulfills this purpose.
Our Ancestors are a part of Aboriginal people being here to this present day. In this artwork, the Ancestors are depicted as steppingstones as each generation is a steppingstone to the next. The dotted lines represent the pathways, journeys and timelines of each generation from ancient times to this very day.
